The Mkomazi National Park is located in the northern part of Tanzania, between Moshi and Tanga. The park finds itself in a beautiful setting with both the Pare and Usambara mountains towering above its boundaries. Depending on the weather, Mount Kilimanjaro can also be seen from the park. In terms of vegetation, Mkomazi marks the southern tip of the Sahel zone which resembles that of a dry, desert like landscape. Due to the climate, the vegetation primarily consist of acacia-commiphora woodlands and towards the western mountains the vegetation changes to a dry land forest.

The main source of water in Mkomazi comes from the Umba River in the southeast. Apart from that, the park sees very little precipitation all year round making game drives along the river area definitely worthwhile.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi to Mkomazi National Park

Depart from the hotel by private car just after breakfast earlier in the morning and drive to Mkomazi National Park; 3hrs arrive in the late afternoon drive back to hotel in Moshi. Mkomazi National Park is located in northeastern Tanzania on the Kenyan border, in Kilimanjaro Region and Tanga Region. It was established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to a national park in 2006. The park covers over 3,234 square kilometers, and is dominated by Acacia–Commiphora vegetation; it is contiguous with Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park. Mkomazi national park is the compounds for African wild dog, and the extensive, patrolled sanctuary for the white and black rhinoceros (which are breeding) have put the reserve on the map, giving it international recognition.

 Verified The secret of a perfect holiday - 9 Days Safari + 6 Days Beach in Tanzania + Zanzibar!
The game drive through the northern circuit with our guide and driver Ben was an unique and unforgettable experience. He showed us animals and plants we would have never seen on our own - he brought us at the right time to the right places. My favorites were the hippos in the Serengeti! The beachholiday and all excursions at Zanzibar organised Agness with her local guides to our fullest contentedness. I loved most the breathtaking boatride to Mnemba-Island and our picnic on a sandbank in the ocean. Important to us were also the cultural and historical sites like the "cultural heritage center/african art gallery" and the "national natural history museum" at Arusha. All campsites and lodges chosen by Aggrey and his company were very comfortable, clean and the staff was friendly and competent. Thanks to Aggrey we could enjoy our holiday in 2021 - althought we booked for 2020. Particulary noteworthy is the special and reliable service for all measures and requirements due to the corona pandemic! My favorite part of the experience was the game ride.
